Height Restrictions Removed for Vehicles over 2m

  • To make it easier to recycle we have removed the 2 metre height restrictions at our recycling centres (except Spring Vale in Rochdale and Every Street in Bury).
  • If you are using a van (including hire van), pick-up truck or vehicle with a twin axle trailer, you will need to apply for a van permit before bringing your waste to the recycling centre.
  • This applies to household waste only– businesses and traders are still required to use the weighbridge to pay to dispose of their waste.
  • If you are disposing of asbestos you will still need to take it to one of our weighbridges and PPE will be required.

Recycling Centre Rules

  • If you live in Greater Manchester (Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside or Trafford) you can use any of our Recycling Centres free of charge for waste and recycling from your home. This includes waste from normal day-to-day household activities and DIY projects. If you live in Wigan, please use the recycling centres managed by Wigan council 
  • No trade waste
  • Sort you waste and recycling before you visit
  • No pedestrian access
  • Please make sure you don’t block access for other road users

How many times can I visit?

The number of times you can visit Greater Manchester Suez Recycling Centres in a year, depends on the size of your vehicle:

  • Cars and cars with single axle trailers – 52 visits a year

This includes: disability-adapted vehicles, SUVs, people carriers with multiple seats (under 2 metres high), bicycles, cargo bikes and bikes with a cargo trailer.

  • Cars with a double axle trailer –18 visits a year
  • All vans, pick-up trucks, estate vans, city vans and chassis vans : 18 visits a year

You must apply for a van permit if you are coming to the Recycling Centre in a van, pickup truck, or with a double axle trailer

To help us monitor number of visits, Automatic Number Plate Recognition and CCTV is used at the Recycling Centre.

What can I take to the Recycling Centre?

Please make sure you separate your waste and recycling so you can put them in the right container when you arrive.

Important information about rubble

You can take hardcore and rubble from DIY projects to a Recycling Centre. You are limited to the amount of rubble you can take in one visit. The limit is five (900mm x 600mm) rubble sacks per visit.

Providing a proof of address

Please take your recent council tax bill, annual water bill or utility bill (gas, electric or landline telephone) relating to the property where the waste is from. You can bring a printed copy or show it on your phone. Please note mobile telephone bills are not accepted.

Providing hire vehicle documents

If you are using a hire vehicle please take your hire agreement documents with you.

If you are using a hire van you will need a Van Permit.

The number of times you can visit Greater Manchester Suez waste transfer facilities in a year, depends on the size of your vehicle:

Why do I need a Permit?

  • The van, pick-up and trailer permit is part of the Trade Waste Access Restriction Policy which was introduced in February 2020. This was to tackle businesses illegally taking waste to the Recycling Centres to avoid paying waste disposal fees, costing your local councils an estimated £5 million a year.
  • The permit only applies to any van designed to carry cargo, pick-up trucks and cars towing a twin axle trailer.
  • Any vehicle (including vans) carrying trade waste are not permitted at the household waste recycling centre. The sites are for residents who wish to dispose of their household waste.
  • You can apply for a permit here

How many times can I visit?

  • The permit allows you to visit 18 times in a year (1stApril to 31st March).
  • If you are using a car towing a trailer, these 18 visits will also come out of the 52 visits a year you can make with your car
