SUEZ recycling and recovery UK has launched its ‘We Refuse Abuse’ campaign to tackle the rising levels of aggression faced by waste and recycling staff in Greater Manchester.
The campaign highlights a 42% increas in serious verbal and physical abuse towards frontline workers, including collection crews, street cleansing teams, and staff at household waste recycling centres.
In Greater Manchester alone, 64 incidents of abuse were reported last year at HWRCs operated by SUEZ—making it one of the worst-affected areas in the country.
The campaign includes a short film showing real incidents captured on CCTV and bodycams, illustrating the impact of abuse on staff and the trauma it can cause.
John Scanlon, CEO of SUEZ recycling and recovery UK, said:
“Most visitors to recycling centres are respectful, but a small number of aggressive individuals are causing serious distress to our teams. These facilities are provided for the public, and our staff are simply doing their jobs. Abuse is never acceptable.”
SUEZ is working with local councils and Greater Manchester Police to ensure all incidents are taken seriously. Measures include enhanced staff training, better reporting systems, and stronger enforcement against offenders.
Together, we’re reminding all residents to treat waste workers with respect and help create a safer working environment for those who provide essential public services.
