Most takeaway coffee cups are made from paper, but they have a thin plastic lining bonded to the inside. This helps them hold your drink and stops the paper from going soggy but means they can’t be recycled in your bins at home.
Some cups are labelled as compostable, but that doesn’t mean they can go in your food and garden waste bin. Compostable packaging can take much longer to break down than food and garden waste, so it needs to be dealt with separately.
The easiest way to cut down on coffee cup waste is to take your own reusable cup. You can wash it, use it again and again, and some coffee shops even offer a discount when you bring your own.
