Getting Started: Your Litter Picking Guide

Plan Your Pick:
  • Choose a safe location. Parks, streets and green spaces are popular choices.
  • Consider the time of day and potential hazards.
  • Contact your local council prior to the event for more information and to arrange a bag collection.
Gather Your Supplies:
  • A long-handled litter picker makes it easier to reach litter without bending over. You can borrow these from SUEZ or from your local council.
  • Wear gloves to protect your hands from sharp objects and germs.
  • Use strong refuse bags for collecting the litter. Please contact your local council to arrange for collection of the bags you collect.
  • Clean your hands before and after your litter pick.
  • Have a basic first-aid kit on hand in case of minor injuries.
  • If litter picking near roads, a high-visibility vest will increase your safety.
Bag Collection:
  • You are responsible for the disposal of all the general waste and recycling that you collect on a litter pick. Please contact your council prior to any planned litter picks and they will advise you where the designated collection points will be for the waste to be left.
  • It is crucial to contact your local council to arrange for the collection of the bags of litter you collect.
  • Litter picking waste cannot be accepted at the Recycling Centre – the waste must be collected via your local council.
Stay Safe:
  • Be aware of traffic and other potential hazards.
  • Stay hydrated, especially during warm weather.
  • Don’t overexert yourself.
  • If you are litter picking with children, ensure they are supervised at all times.

Contacting SUEZ…

Greater Manchester’s waste sites are operated by SUEZ on behalf of R4GM. One of their goals is to help create a circular economy in which nearly all waste materials are given a second life and reused, recycled or recovered for their energy content.

SUEZ are pleased to provide litter picking kits for community use to help with that goal. To request a litter picking kit please download, read, and complete the SUEZ agreement form – then email it to renewmarket.uk@Suez.com
