THREE R’S

We all know what the words recycle and reuse mean but it is much harder to explain the term reduce in the three R’s.

Reducing waste actually means to make less waste in the first place. We could use the term waste prevention for this.

Activity idea

See if individuals can give any examples such as

• Mail preference service to reduce junk mail
• Reusable (real) nappies
• Using bags for life and other reusable bags
• Getting a milk delivery
• Buy from a butcher or greengrocer avoiding over packaged food
• Buy one large bottle of cordial not 10 small disposable drinks

Learning outcomes

Individuals will be able to explain how everyone is responsible for the waste they produce. That everyone makes choices which affects the amount of waste that they produce. They will know some of the ways of reducing their waste.
