THREE R’S

There are lots of ways we can look after our planet. Thinking about the waste that we throw away is a good place to start. The three ‘R’s: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle help us to make good choices about our waste.

Reduce

Reduce means making less waste in the first place. How can you change the way you shop by buying less or choosing items with less packaging? Reducing your waste is the best way to help the environment!

Reuse

Think of ways you could reuse items you might normally throw away for a different purpose. For example, you could save glass jars or plastic boxes for storage.

Recycle

Make sure that you sort rubbish into the right bin so that the materials can be recycled to make new items.

Activities

Download ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Activities’ to further explore how to reduce waste and help the environment. Here you will find activity ideas for both KS1 and KS2.

The ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Scenarios’ activity will help to promote discussion around making the best choices for reducing waste.

The ‘Pledges for our Planet’ activity will help children make environmental pledges for how they will reduce, reuse and recycle their waste.

Learning outcomes

Individuals will be able to explain how everyone is responsible for the waste they produce and that they make choices which affect the amount of waste that they produce. They will know some ways to reduce their waste.
