Polystyrene

Polystyrene such as foam chip packaging, take away cartons, cups etc. cannot be recycled in household recycling bins as it causes problems in recycling facilities due to breaking down into small pieces which can contaminate other materials. Instead:

Think about reusing: polystyrene can be reused for packaging, insulating or can be used for projects if you’re up for some arts and crafts.

if the polystyrene can’t be reused, it should be placed in your general waste bin or alternatively taken to your local recycling centre where it should be put in the general waste container. It will then be sent for energy recovery rather than a landfill.

Never burn polystyrene at home as it is dangerous and releases toxic fumes.
