E-Scooters, E-bikes, E-skateboards

What do I do with e-scooters, e-bikes and e-skateboards?

Electric scooters, electric bikes and electric skateboards can be recycled at your local household waste recycling centre (HWRC) – but with a word of caution.

Do not put electrical or battery-powered items in the scrap metal container at the HWRC. Instead, they must go in the container for small electricals items. If you’re unsure, please ask a site operative.

Electric equipment like scooters, bikes and skateboards use Lithium-ion batteries and recycling them allows valuable and rare materials to be recovered, reducing the need for new resource extraction.

Do not put electrical or battery powered items in any of your bins at home, as these can cause fires when damaged or crushed, posing a risk to bin lorries and waste facilities.

If you are replacing an electrical item, some retailers will collect your old electrical item when they deliver your new one, or you can return some electrical items to the retailer you originally bought it from – check before disposing.

But before you do any of that, ask yourself if someone might benefit from your unwanted scooter, bike or skateboard? Donating it to a charity shop will not only give someone else pleasurable use, but you’ll be also helping a worthwhile cause.
