Rochdale School searches for ‘the Unusual Suspects’ at Waste Education Centre

During National Recycle Week, pupils of Alkrington Primary School, Rochdale were taken on a tour of the Materials Recovery Facility at Longley Lane Manchester, by Recycle for Greater Manchester (R4GM) Education Officers.

30 pupils from Year 4 & 5 went behind the scenes to see first-hand where 300,000 tonnes of recycling is delivered every day to the facility and sorted. Glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles, food tins and drinks cans and aerosols are separated by state of the art technologies.

The school won 2nd prize in the Rochdale Council Recycle4Schools competition; Alkrington Primary school collected over 2,700 ‘Recycle More’ pledges from across the school community to win a cash prize and a coach to the Education Centre.

Sue Nixon, teacher and Eco-School co-ordinator said “Our visit today has been very informative and interesting and we have learnt about the process of what happens to the contents of our recycling bins and how we should be more careful in making sure we don’t put the wrong items in our bins. Recycling is a very important aspect of our school life. All our food waste is collected each week for recycling.”

Recycle Week; a national campaign, which ran from 12th to 18th September focussed this year on ‘The Unusual Suspects’.

During Recycle Week, Recycle for Greater Manchester encouraged all residents to recycle more of The Unusual Suspects which are often overlooked when it comes to recycling around your home.

The Unusual Suspects include items such as:

• Food and Drink Cartons (Tetrapak)
• Aerosol Cans
• Foil and Foil Trays
• Food waste – including tea bags and mouldy food

There are 3 education centres across Greater Manchester that are free for schools (over 7 years old) to visit. To find out more and to book your place, visit the Education Centres page.
