Important information about building and DIY waste

Any waste produced by tradespeople or builders you hired to carry out improvements, repair or alterations to your home is classed as business waste and can’t be disposed of at any of our Recycling Centres. Always ask a tradesperson to include waste disposal in their quote.

If you are recycling or disposing of business waste, visit the business waste page.

Notice of closure

The Raikes Lane weighbridge facility will be closed from Monday 26th August 2019 for public and trade use.

Please note: Hurstwood Court Recycling Centre is open as normal (for household waste and recycling only – vehicles under 2 metres high).

Why is this change taking place?

From September 2019, maintenance work will be carried out on the energy recovery centre, which means the site will not be safe for the public and trade to use to dispose of waste. Once the maintenance work has been completed, it will remain closed to the public and trade – only council vehicles will continue to use the site to tip general household waste. The Greater Manchester Energy Recovery Centre at Raikes Lane is a strictly regulated industrial facility producing energy in a highly controlled environment. This is where general household waste collect by Bolton Council is used to generate electricity

From Monday 26th August, please use alternative facilities:
