Session plan: Introduction to waste and recycling

Learning objectives

To start the discussion about waste and recycling and to learn what is accepted in the different coloured bins in Greater Manchester

Students will be able to:

  • describe the enormous breadth of items that are thrown away or classed as waste and that they can be divided into different categories
  • explain the correct placement of waste items in their own bins and that there are alternatives for items that cannot be recycled
  • explain what the different coloured bins are for in their district which relate to each waste stream

Session plan: STEM and Waste

Materials and their properties and how that helps them to be separated by recycling

Learning objectives

Students will be able to:

  • describe the properties of different materials
  • describe how the properties of certain materials enable them to be separated
  • explain and describe the science behind the separating technologies used in the Materials Recovery Facility
  • explain why other items will end up contaminating the separated recycling
